Landscape Paintings inspired by photos
taken along the road to somewhere else.
My recent paintings are inspired by the scenes captured on camera as I ride in the car. There is magic in the everyday images that we sometimes take for granted and I attempt to capture a bit of that in my paintings.
Having snapped these images allows me to inspect each photo, looking for the ones that inspire me. Each scene is captured at a particular instant in time, never to appear exactly that way again and unique to me in that moment. They often go unnoticed but are beautiful in their simplicity and deserving of further inspection. There are so many variables, light, weather, season, time of day, and on and on.
I look for the essence that sparked my interest then translate it in my painting. An important part of this process is the manipulation of the photo on my camera, to further enhance what is important to me about that image. I suppose this is my way of marrying the available technology with traditional oil painting. Every artist has their own tools and methods of developing an idea and translating it into art. At present this is mine and it has provided endless possibilities for paintings.
I feel that my paintings bridge a gap for the viewer who enjoys and feels comfortable with representational art, but also is open to abstracting the image. I want folks to be able to relate to my work.
An element that often appears in my paintings, is the inclusion of tubes. They usually appear as plant stems, roots, tree trunks or grasses, but can also appear as pipes, wires, blood vessels plumbing, and on and on. Tubes are integral to the sustaining of life, appearing in the animal kingdom and the plant kingdom, as well as the inanimate world. It is impossible to list all the ways we use tubes, but they are infinitely necessary for transporting life-sustaining substances and necessary objects.
